Welcome to TNOS release 1.10!
I can (and will) make you one solemn guarantee.... I guarantee that there
are MASSIVE errors and omissions in the documentation! With this
guarantee in mind, when you have a question or problem, first look in the
docs (I might have gotten SOME of it right). Second, consult the on-line
help systems (more on this later). Next (if you have Internet access),
submit your question to the mailing list "tnos-topics" (again, to be
explained in a moment). Lastly send me personal email. I'm not trying to
be anti-social, but I am a programmer, and time spent answering questions
is time taken away from programming. ;-)
We are working on "TNOS-The Book", "TNOS-The Installation Program", and
and "TNOS-The REAL Documentation", which will help the xNOS novice. A
TNOS Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document is in development. For
now, hard-core NOSers will probably enjoy poking around and finding
hidden treasure.
On-Line Help:
One of the big changes with TNOS is the Help System. While some help has
been available in other NOS variants, it has been incomplete and inconsistant,
at best. Us programming types DON'T like to document this stuff!! ;-D
Within the Command Session, the BBS, the FTP server, and the Conference
Bridge, help has been standardized. Using "?" ("/?" in the Conference
Bridge) gives a summary of the available major commands. In the BBS there
are many two character commands, also.
The "help" command (Conference "/help"), given without a parameter, will
give a quick, one line per command, summary. For example, the BBS "help"
command gives a very complete summary of all BBS commands.
The "help" command (Conference "/help"), given with a parameter, will
give a more complete description about that particular command, with info
on alias commands.
There are still some omissions, but it is fairly complete. When you notice
omissions, please send me that info.
TNOS Support:
It is my intention to keep the world up-to-date with TNOS development, in
case the world is interested. It is my intention to act upon reported
bugs, etc. for my benefit as well as others.
It is NOT my intention to become a "code of the week" club. It is NOT
my intention to be a sacrificial lamb, ready for the slaughter.
With these things in mind, please make all reports and queries as friendly,
cheerful, and pleasant as possible. Remain patient, since this is ONLY
one of several part-time projects. Real life takes first priority.
TNOS Support is provided by the Tampa Local Area Network (TPALAN). Many
times you will get your response from Chuck/KP4DJT or Bruce/N4ZXI. They
will be fielding most of the easier questions. I'll be jumping in on
the BIGGIES.
Mailing list (tnos-topics@lantz.com):
This will serve as one of two official ways of getting support for TNOS.
It will also be a good method of getting the quick fixes and work-arounds
to you. If you have Internet access, subscribe to the mailing list. Send
a message to the List Server (listserv@lantz.com), with a single data line
of "add tnos-topics". The List Server send back a BRIEF response, and
you're in!
While it is very POSSIBLE to also make this available directly to packet
addresses, this is NOT available at this time. Maybe in the future....
Several gateway sites around the globe subscribe to the list for their users.
Mailing list (tnos-faq@lantz.com):
This mailing list is being used to help develop a Frequently Asked
Questions (FAQ) document about TNOS. Feel free to join in, whether your
forte is asking questions or answering them. If you have Internet access,
subscribe to the mailing list. Send a message to the List Server
(listserv@lantz.com), with a single data line of "add tnos-topics".
The List Server send back a BRIEF response, and you're in!
PacComm's Landline BBS:
This is the second official way of getting support for TNOS. The PacComm
BBS has a special TNOS Conference and File areas, that will be mirrors of
the files kept at lantz.cftnet.com. The phone number for the BBS is
(813) 874-3078. I am the moderator of the Conference.
FTP Updates:
As changes are made, the files on "lantz.com" will be updated, as
well as those on the PacComm BBS. Check to make sure you are dealing with
the current version, if you are experiencing a problem.
You can also find the TNOS files on ftp.ucsd.edu in the directory
/hamradio/packet/tcpip/tnos. Most people will want to get them from this
site, since the lantz.com site is connected to the Internet via a 14.4
PPP line, and download times will be shorter with ftp.ucsd.edu.
